Nail Fungus Treatment (Onychomycosis)
A new painless laser procedure is now available for the treatment of toenail fungus (onychomycosis). We use a Cutera laser and the procedure is Laser Genesis.
Onychomycosis (fungus of the nail) is a chronic, progressive, debilitating disease of the nail, nail bed and matrix (root). The traditional treatments of topical creams, lotions, etc, although somewhat effective, are difficult to use in chronic and progressive cases. The main stay of treatment has been oral medications. The most effective treatments until recently in the eradication of onychomycosis have been Sporanox and Lamisil with an approximate 50% cure rate; however, blood tests need to be taken due to the fact that there are side effects, especially with the liver. Cost is also a consideration as well. Treatment needs to be at least for three months and recurrence rate has been high. Often a second round of three months oral medicine is necessary.
The laser procedure has no known side effects and along with good hygiene of the feet and toes has an approximate 80% success rate.
It is performed in one treatment, with a follow-up treatment 6 weeks later, in the comfort of our office, with minimal discomfort, no drugs, or anesthesia. The procedure usually takes approximately 30 minutes.
Reflections Medical Spa recommends that you have a follow-up treatment in 6 weeks and use an anti-fungal foot spray such as Tinactin, to treat your toes and shoes for a short period of time.
It is NOT covered by insurance. We offer CareCredit with 6 months no interest!
It takes approximately 6-12 months to see the results.
